About Kyoto
Kyoto (京都, Kyōto) has been the capital of Japan and the residence of the emperor from 794 until 1868. It is one of the ten largest cities in the country and constitutes a modern face with 1.5 million inhabitants. Over the centuries, Kyoto was reduced to ashes innumerable times by wars and fires, till due to its exceptional historic value the city was dropped from the target cities for the atomic bomb during World War II. Countless temples and shrines and other buildings of priceless historic importance survive in the city today(Japan-guide.com, 2010).
